How To Eat “Light” On Your Fair Day Date

Sunday Funday, aka my favorite day of the week.

It’s a general understanding that Sunday is meant to be a day of rest, but, in my case, Sunday is technically my Saturday, and, let’s be real, who really ever rests on a Saturday?

Not only is it my Saturday, but it’s also the only full day Austin and I usually get to spend together, so we’re always on the prowl for exciting date day ideas.

And, what better place to do date day than The Orange County Fair?

Personally, I’m a sucker for the fair. I mean, you had me at “deep-fried Oreo” and “petting zoo”.

There’s also something so satisfying about the clichéd, cheesy goodness that is having your man win you a giant stuffed animal (a giant stuffed animal that you probably have absolutely no room for at home, but are obsessed with simply because he popped all those damn balloons with a little dart just for you).

Not to mention there’s piglet races. Like, eight tiny piglets running around jumping miniature hurdles on an equally tiny racetrack. I’m sorry, but it’s honestly the cutest thing I’ve ever seen and I’m just not quite over it.

The fair is great. End of story.

Well, actually, let’s backtrack. You know, to that “deep fried Oreo” bit.

Yep, we have to talk about fair food. That greasy, deep-fried, chocolate-covered, caramelized deliciousness that is oh so difficult to walk away from.

Honestly, I have never been able to leave the fair feeling like didn’t just gain ten pounds in all the wrong places. Between my addiction to corn dogs and my inability to avoid the devilishly tempting scent of a funnel cake, there was no escaping the lingering bloat; a feeling that often took away from the fun of the day.

This time, however, I was on a mission. Not necessarily to deprive myself of fair food altogether, but more so to scout out healthier options that weren’t going to weigh me down as I attempted to win myself the entire lineup of stuffed The Secret Life of Pets  characters. (Which, ladies, if you haven’t already dragged your boy to go see with you, let me just say, you’re missing out on some serious cuteness).

What I didn’t realize, though, was how easy that was going to be.

The OC Fair actually dedicates a huge portion of its exhibits to showcasing California’s farming, agriculture, livestock, and culinary communities, where you can experience live demonstrations and purchase tons of fresh, delicious produce.

Also, because I’m clearly obsessed with the piglets, there’s even an area where you can check out the farm animals, which was probably one of my favorite parts of the day because there were multiple litters of itty-bitty Wilburs and Babes born just this month! Adorbs.

You can find these little squish puffs near the Centennial Farm & Agricultural Exhibits.

But, anyways, back to the grub.

Not only can you experience the farm-fresh produce, but I even came across a few food booths that were ideal for keeping it light while still getting your fair food fix.

Here’s a few we tried:

Terri’s Berries + Assorted Fruit Bowl + Located near Centennial Farm

County Fair Smoothies + Mango Tango Smoothie in Pineapple Piña Colada Bomb Pineapple Bowl + Located near the Livestock Area

Pepe’s Mariscos + Shrimp Ceviche & Grilled Fish Taco + Located near the Main Mall

Chuckwagon Texas-Style BBQ + Giant Turkey Leg + Located near Fair Square

Chicken Charlie’s + Chicken Kabob + Located near the Family Fairway

So, if you want a day of indulgence without the bloat, I would definitely recommend these food booths because I am now offically a believer that you can walk out of the fair feeling as good as you did when you walked in.

Also, if you’re interested in a fun, casual summer date idea, you still have time to head on over to the OC Fair (going on now until August 14th). They have an amazing concert series lineup this year as well, including Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, UB40, Earth, Wind & Fire, Hunter Hayes, Chris Young, and so many more!

I hope you guys can make it out before it ends!

Here’s a couple more pictures from Sunday:

You MUST feed the butterflies in Crafters Village. They were obsessed with Austin.

 Until next time.
