Greetings, kittens, how are we today?
Hopefully the answer is “fan-fricken-tastic.”
Any who, I’ve missed you all, and, once again, I’m sorry for yet another longgg break in between posts. Life, y’know?
I know you know, so let’s just skip the awkward preamble, shall we?
Alright, so last week I posted a Twitter poll asking what you wanted to see on the blog, which, truth be told, was almost entirely unnecessary because in the back of my mind I already knew which option was going to win.
So, without any further adieu…you voted…now here it is…drumroll please….
We’re talking DERMAL FILLERS today!
HOWEVER, before I even utter another word on the subject, I first must say THIS IS A JUDGEMNT-FREE ZONE.
Cosmetic enhancements, whether surgical or nonsurgical, aren’t a favorite of everyone. I get it.
Natural beauty is a glorious thing, but I will always stand behind the ideology that YOUR body is YOUR body, and YOU can do whatever YOU want to YOUR body. Dabble in whatever beauty enhancements make you feel like your best self, and embrace your decision (that goes for anything in life, really).
That being said, I am also one who enjoys experimenting with beauty products, treatments, trends, and procedures. Obviously. Hence why I started this blog.
Now, I’ve never personally had a cosmetic procedure done that was “permanent,” but that’s not to say I see anything wrong with going down that route if you choose to. However, I do prefer to try things that I can easily reverse or discontinue if they aren’t necessarily copacetic to my lifestyle.
In this particular instance, I had always wished my lips were just a tad fuller. I’m not talking Kylie Jenner status here whatsoever, but, y’know, a little more plumpness and pout never hurt anyone.
Let’s be clear, though. No, I didn’t need lip fillers. I wanted lip fillers. So, I got them.
Why? Well, in my opinion, my lips were slightly asymmetrical on the top, which was pretty noticeable up close. I know that’s common and natural, but it was a minor insecurity of mine for many years. Also, from certain angles my top lip was nonexistent in pictures, which was a bummer. I had those fly selfie angles where I looked like I had a little somethin’ somethin’ goin’ on up there, but if anyone other than myself took the picture, I often felt like the One-Lipped Wonder.
This was something I could have definitely lived with (I mean, I did for 25 years), but in this day and age, I have the option not to, so what the hell?
Let me reiterate, this is simply how I felt about MY lips. Others, I’m sure, have their own opinions about my decision. Oh well. C’est la vie.
Anyways, in terms of the look I was going for, I was basically aiming to achieve the most natural unnatural vibes. Truthfully, I wasn’t even sure if I wanted to put an entire syringe of Juvéderm in my lips. I really was not trying to go crazy here, kids. I just wanted to even things out.
I spent countless hours on the Internet and Insta comparing pricing, facilities, injection styles, etc. before I made my decision. There was no way I was just going to go in to this sort of thing all willy nilly.
This cosmetic center is a widely known brand that specializes in procedures such as laser hair removal, CoolSculpting, Botox, laser tattoo removal, and much more. Recently, as I came to find, they added dermal fillers to their repertoire.
About a year ago I had a Clear + Brilliant consultation at one of their Orange County locations when my acne was just absolutely out of control, and I remembered how personable and professional the staff was (the facilities are also immaculate, which is a must in my opinion). So, when I saw that they were now offering fillers, I jumped at the opportunity to schedule another consultation with them.
One of the best things about this brand is that they have SO many locations (check out the LaserAway nearest to you here). This time around I visited their Hermosa Beach store, and, just as before, my experience was top-notch.
If you have ever considered getting any type of filler, then you know they come with a pretty price tag. That being said, I was pleasantly surprised when I was informed that LaserAway offered a payment plan for their fillers (and I believe various other procedures as well). While I was prepared to pay for the fillers up front, I ultimately opted for this payment method, which has worked out great for me so far. You can even set up automatic monthly payments. SO easy.
While you do have to pay for the entire syringe of filler, you do not necessarily have to use the entire syringe. That was really what sold me.
Side note: My nurse informed me that if I chose not to use the entire syringe in my lips, I had the option to use it on other areas, like my under-eyes or smile lines. Pretty neat.
I’m so glad I didn’t have to use the whole syringe on the first go. I actually used just a little more than half the first time around, which helped me ease my way into the size difference.
Also, in regards to size, I wouldn’t consider my lips large at all. Honestly, most people probably don’t even notice to this day. But, this is my face we’re talking about here. I’ve been looking at myself in the mirror for 25 years, so any change is noticeable to me.
About 3 weeks later, after my swelling had gone down completely, I went back in for a touchup and distributed the rest of the filler evenly in both lips. At the time, had there not been a few little spots that needed some evening out, I probably wouldn’t have used the rest of the filler. However, now that my lips have fully settled, I’m actually glad I finished off the syringe.
The Gruesome Deets…Or Lack There Of…
In terms of pain, swelling, and bruising, all of the above were very minimal for me. I will admit, I’m starting to believe that I have a pretty high pain tolerance. Quite frankly, I didn’t think it was bad at all. However, if you don’t like needles, you probably won’t enjoy the experience.
Aside from icing my lips for about 3 minutes before the injection nurse went to town, there was a little bit of numbing solution in the actual syringe itself, which helped slightly. Don’t get too excited, though. You will still feel the needle pinch and pierce your flesh…over and over and over. Sorry, but it’s the truth.
In the few days immediately following my first session, I swelled quite a bit and developed a small bruise (that was very easy to cover with makeup) on my top lip. When I went back the second time, I didn’t swell or bruise at all. I think it really just depends on your body and if you take the proper precautions.
For instance, I found that following these tips from LaserAway before, during, and after treatment really minimized my swelling, bruising, and discomfort.
Also, the procedure really only took about 20 to 25 minutes each time, so you are literally in, out, and on your way with no downtime.
My Personal Advice
- DO YOUR RESEARCH. I can’t stress this enough. The facility/professional you select will make or break your experience, so choose wisely.
- DON’T GO CRAZY ROUND 1. If you aren’t required to use the entire syringe all at once, I wouldn’t. Let yourself ease in to your new look. Give your lips time to heal and settle before you go full throttle. You never know, a little may actually go a long way.
- DO IT FOR YOU AND ONLY YOU. If you’re going to screw with your face for anyone other than yourself, don’t. While you can technically dissolve lip fillers and they do disintegrate over time, it’s still a costly procedure that you should only commit to for the right reasons. Make sure this is something YOU really want before you shell out the Benjamins, okay?
Other than that, all I can say is that I’m very pleased with the way my lips turned out. Will I get them filled again once they dissolve? I’m not sure. Maybe. Maybe not. For now I’m happy with them, so I’ll have to keep you posted.
Also, remember, you’re a beautiful little butterfly just as you are, and you will be no matter what you decide to do (or not to do) to your body. No one necessarily needs cosmetic enhancements, but if you choose to experiment, then God speed, my friend. Do you.
There you have it, lovies. I’m open to any and all questions you may have about the experience, so feel free to ask away in the comments below.
Until next time, babes.
